KwaZulu-Natal SAPS Commissioner Dismisses Speculation on Hawks Top Job

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS commissioner, Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has dismissed speculation that he is in the running for the top position at the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

Speaking before the Portfolio Committee on Police, Mkhwanazi made it clear that he has no interest in the role, stating that it would not align with his career ambitions and would take him away from frontline crime-fighting.

“When I joined the SAPS, it was my resolve to face the criminals directly. That’s why I joined the Public Order Police unit, and from there, I moved to the Special Task Force. I never wanted to be a detective because I wanted to be involved in real action, which is a combination of both investigation and combatting,” he explained.

Mkhwanazi emphasized that he intends to complete his current contract, which has a year remaining, before stepping away from the force. “I will do my job, and from there, I will go home and relax,” he concluded.
