Four South African Police Service (SAPS) officers appeared in the Stilfontein Magistrate’s Court on charges of aiding the escape of alleged illegal mining kingpin, James Neo “Tiger” Tshoaeli. The officers—Warrant Officers Jack Motlhabya (37) and Menzi Shabalala (38), along with Sergeants Ntuthuko Dladla (40) and Samkelo Mbotho (38)—were each granted bail of R1,000.
The charges stem from an incident on 15 January 2025, when Tshoaeli resurfaced from Shaft 11 in Stilfontein during a rescue operation targeting illegal miners. Despite being identified as a key figure in illegal mining activities, Tshoaeli was not booked into any police station or hospital and remains at large.
An investigation by the Anti-Corruption Unit led to the arrest of the four officers on 31 January 2025. They face charges of defeating the ends of justice and aiding a detainee to escape. Their next court appearance is scheduled for 29 May 2025, as the investigation continues.
The escape of Tshoaeli has intensified concerns about corruption within law enforcement and the influence of illegal mining syndicates in South Africa. The search for Tshoaeli continues, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
