The Aliwal North Magistrates’ Court has postponed the case against Anelle de Bruin (46), the wife of a well-known local farmer, who is accused of conspiring to murder her husband in a staged “farm attack.”
De Bruin was arrested on 9 January 2025 after police received a tip-off from a middleman she had allegedly approached to hire hitmen. Investigations revealed that she had already made a down payment and promised to settle the remaining amount once the murder was carried out and insurance payouts were processed.
According to police reports, she was allegedly recorded giving instructions for the hitmen to shoot her husband at their farm, kill the family’s dogs, and shoot the vehicle’s tyres to make it appear as a violent farm attack. She had also reportedly informed the middleman about how long it would take neighboring farmers to respond. If successful, she stood to inherit more than R50 million.
The prosecution requested a postponement to complete further investigations, including gathering outstanding witness statements, photo albums, and cellphone records. The case will return to court on 23 April 2025.
De Bruin remains out on R2,000 bail under strict conditions, including not returning to the farm and only having supervised visits with her children.
