Man Arrested After Viral Video Shows Assault on Two Women in Elliotdale

ZWELITSHA – In a swift response to a disturbing case of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), police have arrested a 29-year-old suspect who was captured in a viral video assaulting two women in Sholorha Location, Elliotdale.

The video, which circulated widely on social media, showed the suspect attacking the women on Thursday, 30 January 2025. A case of assault was immediately opened, and police launched an investigation. However, the suspect was initially nowhere to be found.

Determined to bring him to justice, detectives from Elliotdale SAPS tracked the suspect down and successfully arrested him. He has been formally charged with assault and is set to appear in the Elliotdale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 3 February 2025.

At this stage, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.

SAPS Condemns Gender-Based Violence

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has strongly condemned acts of GBV, emphasizing that such heinous crimes have no place in society.

“SAPS remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and children. We will continue to work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute GBV cases and provide support and protection to victims,” a police spokesperson stated.

Authorities have urged communities to report any incidents of GBV to their nearest police station or call the SAPS Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111.
