At 36, award-winning musician Loyiso Bala faced a harsh reality—his career in music, though successful, might not sustain him in the long run. With no formal degree or corporate experience, he realized he needed to take a bold step to secure his future.

“I could already see where things were headed. Despite a successful career, I would likely spend my days blaming the system for why musicians struggle financially. Not because the argument wasn’t valid, but because my career would have quietly slipped away, leaving me with nothing but frustration and ‘back in my day’ stories,” Bala shared on social media.

Instead of waiting for his career to fade, he made a life-changing decision. He walked into Henley Business School Africa, unsure of what lay ahead. Through a friend’s recommendation, he applied for the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program, which allowed his industry experience to count toward a Postgraduate Diploma in Business (PGDip).

The process was daunting. Bala recalls sitting in his first class, feeling out of his depth, secretly Googling terms like “HR” and “balance sheets” to keep up. But he didn’t quit. He completed his diploma and then took an even bigger leap—pursuing an MBA.

While studying, Bala volunteered at TBN Africa as a presenter and producer, gaining valuable industry experience outside of music. Just before completing his MBA, he was appointed Channel Director. Three years later, he joined SABC, taking on leadership roles in some of South Africa’s biggest radio stations.

Now, at 45, Bala stands in a career he once thought was out of reach. His journey is a testament to resilience, reinvention, and the courage to step into the unknown.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: it’s never too late to start over, to learn, to change paths, or to embrace new opportunities. Your past does not define your future. On the other side of fear is growth. Be bold. Step into the unknown. And when you’ve done all you can, trust that God will take care of the rest.”
