A 58-year-old Imam, Moegsien Hendricks, from Cape Town was shot and killed in Gqeberha in what appears to be a targeted assassination.
Brazen Execution in Broad Daylight
According to police reports, the fatal shooting occurred on Saturday morning in Haley Place, Extension 24, Bethelsdorp. Hendricks was inside a gold-coloured VW T-Roc with his driver when a silver Toyota Hilux double cab blocked their path.
Two masked gunmen emerged from the Hilux and fired multiple shots at the vehicle before fleeing the scene. The driver survived the attack but Hendricks, who was seated at the back, was shot and killed instantly.
Possible Motive: LGBTQ+ Wedding Controversy
Hendricks had reportedly travelled to Gqeberha to perform a Nikkah (Islamic wedding) for a lesbian couple—a ceremony that local Imams had refused to officiate.
Shortly after the wedding, he was gunned down, raising speculation that the killing could be linked to the controversial event.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive but have called for public assistance in tracing the suspects.
