Witness Mdaka Critiques Social Grants, Advocates for Financial Literacy

In a bold statement, author and financial literacy advocate Witness Mdaka has voiced strong opinions on the impact of social grants in South Africa. Speaking about the widely debated R350 grant, Mdaka argues that such handouts, while intended to alleviate poverty, primarily benefit large corporations rather than the individuals they aim to help.

“The R350 grant or any social grant for that matter does not really benefit the poor much. It benefits the rich,” Mdaka asserted. He emphasized that the economic system funnels these funds back to major retailers, such as Shoprite, Boxer, and Pick n Pay, where the recipients spend their grants. “Your life cannot be changed by R350 or even R1500. But if I own these stores, and 15 million people spend their R350 each there, imagine the profits,” he added.

Mdaka’s critique extends beyond the immediate economic impact. He contends that social grants perpetuate a cycle of dependency, preventing recipients from becoming producers and owners within the economy. “Any money given to the poor does not really belong to them because the poor don’t know how to keep money. The money is merely kept for the rich,” he remarked, encouraging a shift in mindset towards production and financial growth.

To break this cycle, Mdaka advocates for education and mindset transformation. He promotes his book, It’s More Than Just Money, as a tool to help individuals escape poverty and dependency. “My book teaches you how to break the spirit of poverty, escape the rat race, and become a producer,” Mdaka stated.

In a special offer for the first weekend of 2025, Mdaka is selling his book for R350, including delivery, as a step towards empowering individuals to take control of their financial futures.
