Western Cape Police Recover Hijacked Vehicle and Arrest Two Suspects in Separate Incidents

WESTERN CAPE – In a swift response, members of Operation Shanela, deployed in Khayelitsha, successfully recovered a hijacked vehicle and arrested a 32-year-old man for possession of the stolen vehicle and illegal possession of ammunition.

The operation took place on Wednesday, 14 January 2025, around 17:00, following a tip-off about a hijacked white Toyota Quantum minibus in the Makhaza policing precinct. Officers spotted the vehicle in the Qandu Qandu informal settlement. Upon their approach, several men fled the scene in different directions. The officers pursued and apprehended one suspect, who was found with a loaded magazine. The hijacked vehicle was recovered and secured for further investigation. The suspect is set to appear in Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court after being charged.

In a separate incident, Shanela officers on crime prevention duty in Sinqolampthi Street, Browns Farm, Nyanga, arrested a 23-year-old man. The man, who appeared suspicious, was searched, leading to the discovery of a 7.65 pistol with an empty magazine. He was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and will face charges in Athlone Magistrates’ Court.

The successful operations underline the effectiveness of Operation Shanela in tackling crime and ensuring community safety.
