CAPE TOWN – Western Cape police have seized 13 rifles and seven handguns following a deadly shooting incident in Nyanga that resulted in the death of one taxi security guard and injuries to seven others. The violence is believed to be linked to an ongoing conflict within the taxi association.

Nineteen security guards are currently being questioned in connection with the incident. According to police reports, a coordinated team comprising police intelligence operatives, the National Intervention Unit, K-9, the drone unit, and the provincial combat team were monitoring movements near the Nyanga taxi rank when the shooting erupted between rival groups. The prompt response by the police prevented further bloodshed.

In response to the violence, police have increased their presence in Nyanga and other hotspots, leaving many commuters stranded. The provincial taxi task team has taken over the investigation, while engagements with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) are ongoing to verify the legality of the confiscated firearms and the security companies involved.
