Unemployed Doctors in KZN to March for Government Action

KwaZulu-Natal – The growing issue of unemployed doctors in South Africa has reached a critical point, with over 1,500 qualified medical professionals unable to secure jobs. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities, a group of unemployed doctors in KwaZulu-Natal is set to take action, organizing a march to demand government intervention.

The march will take place on Monday morning, starting from the UNISA Pietermaritzburg campus. The group aims to bring attention to the crisis and hold the government accountable for the lack of placement opportunities in public healthcare facilities.

Dr. Mxolisi Xulu, one of the march’s conveners, expressed the doctors' grievances:
“Our Minister said that they don’t owe us employment or job placements, and that we should consider private healthcare or work overseas. But we studied here in South Africa, and the Department of Health supported us through medical school. We are saying we are not leaving—we’re here to serve our communities.”

The group is inviting other unemployed doctors to join the march to amplify their collective voice and push for sustainable solutions to the growing unemployment crisis within the healthcare sector.

With the country’s public healthcare system already under immense pressure, the march serves as a reminder of the untapped potential of these qualified professionals and the urgent need for government action.
