A collaborative operation between Sandringham SAPS, Gauteng Hawks, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and a private security company has successfully dismantled a human trafficking ring in Sandringham, Johannesburg.
Authorities acted on a tip-off from neighbors who reported suspicious activities at a residence on Luster Road. Upon arrival, they discovered 15 naked individuals, suspected to be Ethiopian nationals, held captive inside the house. Eleven of the victims were transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims managed to escape by breaking open a window and burglar bar. Some of them were found near the crime scene, while others are still unaccounted for.
Further inquiries led to the arrest of three suspects, allegedly involved in human trafficking and illegal possession of a firearm. A 9mm P Tokarev pistol, along with a magazine, was recovered during the operation.
The case has been handed over to the Gauteng Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team for further investigation. The 26 undocumented individuals are currently being processed to confirm their status as victims of trafficking.
The public is urged to report any sightings of individuals without clothing in the area, as they may be linked to this incident.
