The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has decided to press charges against a Johannesburg TikToker who sparked outrage online after sharing a video of himself force-feeding beer to a fish.
In the controversial video, the man is seen holding a fish and pouring beer into its mouth while laughing. Another clip shows him making two fish "kiss" for his amusement.
The NSPCA has confirmed that the individual has been identified and contacted, with charges being prepared under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
"The NSPCA will be filing criminal charges against the individual depicted in the viral video pouring beer into the mouth of a common carp," said NSPCA spokesperson Jacques Peacock.
Peacock highlighted the legal consequences for animal cruelty, which could include imprisonment, fines, or a suspended sentence.
The TikToker reportedly admitted that his actions were meant to be humorous but now faces public backlash and legal action.
Peacock also emphasized the rise of animal cruelty videos on platforms like TikTok, noting that inspectors often dedicate substantial time and resources to tracking down offenders.
A similar incident in October 2023, where a python was forced to drink beer, gained attention but the perpetrators were not identified.
The NSPCA hopes this case will serve as a deterrent against using animal cruelty as entertainment and promote respect for animal welfare laws.
The organization commended the public's strong reaction, which underscores growing awareness and compassion for animals, including fish, which are often overlooked for their capacity to suffer.
