Three Suspects Arrested Following Fatal Shooting Incident on R543 Road in Piet Retief

NELSPRUIT - Three male suspects have been arrested in connection with a tragic shooting incident that occurred on Thursday afternoon, 09 January 2025, around 15:00, along the R543 (De Wet) Road in Piet Retief. The incident, believed to be linked to taxi conflict, resulted in the fatal shooting of three males.

Following the incident, various stakeholders collaborated effectively, leading to the suspects being apprehended on the N17 Road while driving a white VW Polo with Gauteng registration plates. During the arrest, four firearms, including a rifle and three pistols, along with ammunition, were discovered hidden inside the vehicle.

The Mpumalanga police team, consisting of the Murder and Robbery Unit, Detectives, Crime Intelligence, and other role players, is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The motive for the killings remains unknown, and two individuals reportedly sustained injuries during the event.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the swift and collaborative efforts of all involved parties, including POLSEC, private security, farmers, various SAPS units, and the community. He urged the public to remain calm and allow law enforcement to handle the investigation, discouraging any form of violence in response to disputes.

The suspects are expected to appear at the Piet Retief Magistrate's Court on Monday, 13 January 2025, facing charges of three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and robbery with a firearm. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
