A 23-year-old man from Thabong has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty of sexual assault and robbery.
The incident occurred on 19 April 2019, around 23:00, when the 23-year-old female victim was attending a church gathering. She was approached by a friend who asked her to join a group to collect blankets. As the group of five returned to the church, they encountered two boys who warned them of danger, prompting the friends to scatter. The victim, unfortunately, got separated from the group.
She was then confronted by the accused, who threatened her with a knife and forced her into a deserted house, demanding sexual favors. Despite her refusal, the ordeal continued. As they returned toward the church, the assailant pushed her to the ground in an open field and, at knifepoint, coerced her into performing inappropriate sexual acts and robbed her of her cellphone. He later tried to break into a shack with her but the victim managed to escape.
The case was handed over to Sergeant Themba Jilimba of the Thabong Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit, who worked diligently with Mr. Masoane of the National Prosecuting Authority. Their combined efforts led to the successful prosecution and a 25-year sentence for the offender, bringing justice to the victim.
