The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has made a breakthrough in the case concerning the alleged leaking of the Class of 2024 matric results online. A 21-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the leak, which was reportedly being sold on the internet.

Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Katlego Mogale, confirmed the arrest on Thursday, stating that the young man was apprehended after a raid was carried out at a residence in Hillcrest, north of Johannesburg. This raid followed a formal complaint lodged by the Department of Education on Sunday, 12 January 2025, leading to the transfer of the case to the Hawks for further investigation.

Acting on a search-and-seizure warrant, the Hawks' Serious Economic Offences Unit, supported by the Cybercrime Investigation Head Office, executed the operation early Thursday morning. During the search, law enforcement officers discovered various electronic gadgets, along with an unlicensed shotgun and live ammunition.

"The 21-year-old suspect will be detained for the unlawful possession of a firearm. Further investigations into the matric result leak are ongoing," Mogale said.

The leak of the matric results has raised concerns about the integrity of the education system and the potential for exploitation of sensitive student information. The Hawks are continuing their investigation and are determined to bring those responsible for the leak to justice.
