Primrose, Germiston – Early this morning, 21 January 2025, officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit were involved in a shootout while conducting an operation against illegal mining activities in the Marathon informal settlement, East Rand.
At approximately 04:30, while executing the operation, officers were confronted by a group of armed suspects who opened fire using a rifle, a 9mm handgun, and a revolver. The officers tactically responded, leading to a shootout.
During the exchange, one suspect was fatally wounded, while another, armed with a rifle, managed to flee the scene. Four suspects were apprehended, and unlicensed firearms were seized.
The situation remains active as officers continue to secure the area and investigate the incident further. The EMPD is committed to curbing illegal mining activities and ensuring the safety of the community.
