R85,000 Lobola Rejected by Malume in Mgiba Family Negotiations
Trouble has erupted between two families following a lobola negotiation that took place this past weekend. The Nonyane family representative, affectionately known as Malume, rejected an offer of R85,000 from the Mgiba family, who were seeking to marry their bride, Peggy Nonyane. The offer included eight cows, each valued at R10,000, and an additional R5,000 fine for having a child with Peggy before lobola. The total amounted to R85,000, but Malume stood firm in his refusal.
“I cannot accept this R85,000 myself. If my sisters feel tempted, they can proceed without me,” Malume reportedly stated.
Malume’s Reasons for Rejection
Malume, who has raised Peggy after her parents passed away, argued that her husband-to-be, Mark Mgiba, has the financial means to pay the R200,000 initially requested by the family.
“Peggy is a matron at the hospital, and her husband is a paramedic and General Inspector. What’s stopping him from paying the agreed-upon amount? Our daughter no longer supports her aunts who raised her and put her through school. Even the three-room house she started building remains incomplete. Meanwhile, she lives comfortably in a 12-15 room double-story house with her in-laws in White River,” he added.
Malume’s R200,000 Demands
Malume outlined how the R200,000 would be used:
- Completing the unfinished house left by Peggy’s late parents.
- Finishing the three-room house Peggy abandoned.
- Erecting tombstones for Peggy’s parents.
- Enrolling her two siblings in driving school and security training, as they didn’t complete their education.
The Groom’s Final Offer
Mark Mgiba, the prospective groom, was firm in his response.
“If they don’t want this R85,000, they can leave it. It means Peggy will be mine for free. They must go to work if they want R200,000. My final offer is R90,000, and that’s where I stand,” said Mgiba.
Way Forward
Following the heated exchange, both families agreed to postpone the negotiations and will set a new date to continue discussions.
