MUSINA, LIMPOPO – A coordinated operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and its crime-fighting partners resulted in the seizure of counterfeit and illicit goods valued at over R5 million in Musina, Limpopo. The operation also led to the arrest of four suspects.

The National Counterfeit Goods Unit, supported by the SAPS Gauteng Drone Team, the Bloemfontein K9 Unit, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs, and brand protectors, spearheaded the operation. The MAJOC roving team, part of OPERATION VALA UMGODI, also played a critical role. Although primarily focused on combating crimes linked to illicit mining, the team addresses various criminal activities in the province.

On Sunday, January 12, 2025, authorities executed a search-and-seizure warrant at a shopping mall in Musina’s central business district (CBD). The operation uncovered over 2,000 counterfeit and illicit items, including sneakers, clothing, cell phone accessories, perfumes, and consumables.

Three individuals—two Eritrean nationals and one Bangladeshi national, all asylum seekers—were arrested for dealing in counterfeit goods. Additionally, the Bangladeshi national was charged with bribery after attempting to bribe officers to avoid arrest.

In a separate incident the same day, officers conducting vehicle searches in the area apprehended another suspect for possession of a stolen vehicle. They also seized dagga and drugs found abandoned in a taxi after the driver and commuters fled the scene on foot.

This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the SAPS and its partners to combat counterfeit goods and other illicit activities, ensuring the safety and security of communities in Limpopo.

Further investigations are underway, and the arrested individuals are expected to appear in court soon.
