Judicial Conduct Tribunal Probes Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Judge President Selby Mbenenge
The Judicial Conduct Tribunal in Rosebank, Johannesburg, is continuing its investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Judge President Selby Mbenenge. Andiswa Mengo, who served as a Judges’ Secretary, has accused Mbenenge of inappropriate conduct through in-person interactions and electronic communications.
During her testimony, Mengo admitted that she lacked the courage at the time to directly ask Mbenenge to stop sending her messages. She faced cross-examination from Mbenenge’s legal counsel, Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane SC, who questioned her decision to send the judge a Bible verse on the day of the alleged incident.
Sikhakhane challenged Mengo’s actions, arguing that sending a parable or a Bible verse might not have effectively communicated her discomfort to Mbenenge. He suggested that such a message could be misinterpreted by the recipient. In response, Mengo maintained that the verse she sent clearly conveyed her disapproval of the judge’s actions, although she admitted she was unable to confront him directly at the time.
When questioned about whether she had amassed the courage to speak out, Mengo reiterated, “I did not have the courage at the time.”
The cross-examination is expected to continue as the tribunal seeks clarity on the allegations and the interactions between Mengo and Judge President Mbenenge.
