A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for assaulting a man and raping his mother. The crimes occurred on December 23 and 24, 2022, at Valeria farm near Hopetown.
The accused was found guilty and sentenced to 3 years for assault and 15 years for rape. The sentences will run concurrently. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The police commissioner commended the investigation and prosecution teams, emphasizing the need to address gender-based violence and femicide. The police will continue to work with social crime prevention groups to change behavior and social norms.
