The South African music industry has lost an icon with the passing of Kwaito legend, Victor Bogopane, known to his fans as Doc Shebeleza. He died at the age of 51 after a long battle with illness, his family confirmed.
Shebeleza, who rose to prominence in the 1990s, made an unforgettable mark on the Kwaito genre with his debut album S’Kumfete in 1996. The album produced chart-topping tracks such as Kum’nandi, Ebumnandini, and Ghetsa Ghetsa, establishing him as a household name in South African music. He was a pioneer in the genre, and his contributions to Kwaito made him one of the most influential artists in the country during that era.
In addition to his solo career, Doc Shebeleza founded the group Amaskumfete, which was known for their energetic and catchy hits like Tsipa Tsipa. His music was loved by many for its unique ability to blend personal stories, joy, and struggles into deeply relatable lyrics that resonated with a wide audience.
Beyond music, Shebeleza dedicated his later years to philanthropy, founding Amaha, an organization aimed at supporting fellow artists and providing opportunities for growth within the music industry.
In 2014, his legacy was honored by the release of the hit song Doc Shebeleza by Cassper Nyovest, which not only dominated the charts but also reflected the lasting influence Shebeleza had on younger generations of artists.
Doc Shebeleza’s passing marks the end of an era for South African Kwaito, but his music and legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those who loved his work.
