In the heart of Daveyton, Benoni, Happy Mhlongo, known professionally as Hapivaal, found himself at his lowest point. Bleeding and abandoned near a tavern, his swollen ankle and broken spirit mirrored the depths of his struggle. Once a promising musician, he had succumbed to alcoholism and depression after losing his job and the woman he loved. Isolated from his family and community, he was a man on the brink of giving up.
That fateful night, as he lay in a cold passage, the wind sweeping through his body, he awaited the darkness to claim him. But instead, something stirred within him. He realized he was still alive—and that was enough to make a decision.
A Journey of Redemption
“I vowed to myself that I would change my life,” recalls Hapivaal. And so began his transformation. With the support of Melisizwe Mandela and others who believed in him, he started rebuilding his life, reconnecting with his passion for music, and distancing himself from self-destructive habits.
Hapivaal, who first made his mark in the early 2000s with his emotive lyrics and storytelling, is now nearly three years sober. His journey from rock bottom to revival has not only been a personal victory but a beacon of hope for others facing similar struggles.
With renewed purpose, he joined forces with ABYFAB, a former member of Cashtime, to create platforms for young artists. Together, they launched Raps House with the Vur Vai gents, a hip-hop club dedicated to nurturing emerging talent. In addition, Hapivaal now manages Amashocase, a group of exceptionally talented musicians dedicated to pushing the boundaries of South African hip-hop.
Music as a Voice of Experience
Hapivaal’s latest release, Uthando Luyabiza, featuring Noxolo Buthelezi, is a deeply personal track inspired by the film Love Don’t Cost a Thing. However, in contrast to the movie’s message, Hapivaal’s song reflects the harsh reality that love does come at a cost—emotionally, financially, and in every other way.
“‘Uthando Luyabiza’ is about my struggle and the pain I’ve endured, which so many others continue to suffer. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest times, there’s a way out,” says Hapivaal.
A Legacy of Resilience
Happy Mhlongo’s story is one of survival, resilience, and transformation. From being abandoned in a passage to standing strong as a mentor and musician, he proves that it is never too late to rewrite your story.
Through music and mentorship, Hapivaal continues to uplift others, ensuring that his journey serves as a guide for those struggling to find their way. His legacy is not just in the songs he creates but in the lives he touches.
