NELSPRUIT – The Witbank Regional Court has sentenced 60-year-old Fanie Petros Mtshali to 15 years of direct imprisonment for the murder of his 24-year-old daughter. The incident, which occurred on 10 September 2022 in Phola near Witbank, shocked the local community.

Details of the Incident

The court heard that on the evening of 10 September 2022, the victim returned home late, prompting an argument with her father. During the confrontation, Mtshali reprimanded his daughter and slapped her, causing her to fall onto a television set. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Emergency Medical Services and the South African Police Service (SAPS) were called to the residence, where the victim was declared deceased.

Arrest and Trial

Mtshali was arrested the following day, 11 September 2022, and charged with murder. Bail was denied, and he remained in custody throughout the trial. On 21 January 2025, the court handed down the 15-year prison sentence. Mtshali was also declared unfit to possess a firearm under the Firearms Control Act.

SAPS Condemns Domestic Violence

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the sentence and emphasized the importance of resolving family conflicts peacefully.
