Two foreign nationals, Daniel Thegabu Weldekidan (42) and his spouse Yirgalem Gebremichael Melese (42), appeared before the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on 8 January 2025. The pair was arrested by the Hawk's Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, in collaboration with Khowa K9 and Aliwal North Public Order Police, for possession of drugs, an unlicensed firearm, and ammunition on 7 January 2025.
A multi-disciplinary team had received information at approximately 21:30 on 7 January 2025 about a residence in Zwelitsha location, Aliwal North, suspected of housing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Following up on the tip-off, the police arrived at the property and requested to search the premises. Upon entering the house, the police found the couple inside and proceeded with the search. They discovered a 9mm pistol with live rounds of ammunition in the couple’s bedroom, which was seized. The search continued, and a bunch of KHAT drug was found in the dining room and was also confiscated.
The couple made their first appearance at the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on 8 January 2025. The matter was remanded to 24 January 2025 for an interpreter. Both suspects remain in custody.
