CAPRISA Voices Concern Over US Withdrawal from WHO

The Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) has expressed significant concern following the United States' announcement to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The decision, announced by newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump, cites dissatisfaction with the WHO's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health crises.

Professor Salim Abdool Karim, Director of CAPRISA, criticized the move, highlighting the critical role the WHO plays in global health.

“Anywhere you go in the world, they will treat you based on the World Health Organisation guidelines. The WHO plays a major role in how patients are treated, in health policy, in controlling epidemics, and so on,” Abdool Karim stated.

He further remarked, “By pulling out of the WHO, the United States is signaling that they no longer wish to engage in global health leadership or in efforts to make the world a healthier place.”

CAPRISA and other health organizations fear that the US withdrawal could undermine global health initiatives and international cooperation, potentially compromising efforts to combat global health challenges.

This development follows closely on President Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, further raising concerns about the country’s role in addressing international issues.
