The African National Congress (ANC) has urged the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action following a series of deadly attacks on UN peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Thirteen members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have lost their lives in the past week amid escalating clashes between M23 rebels and the DRC army.
ANC Condemns Misinformation and Calls for Sensitivity
Addressing the media after the ANC National Lekgotla in Johannesburg, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula dismissed misleading reports regarding the soldiers' deaths, urging the public to await an official briefing from the Minister of Defence, Angie Motshekga, scheduled for Wednesday.
“These brave men and women paid the ultimate price in their service to peace and security on the African continent. The ANC salutes their courage, dedication, and sacrifice in the fight for peace and stability. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families during this difficult time, and we wish a swift recovery to those injured in the attack.” – Fikile Mbalula

In its latest update, the SANDF revealed that three soldiers were killed instantly, with another succumbing to injuries after a mortar attack near Goma Airport, where the SANDF base is stationed. Additionally, nine more soldiers lost their lives in fierce combat against the M23 armed group over the weekend.
Despite the heavy losses, the SANDF reaffirmed its commitment to its peacekeeping mission under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and UN mandates.
