Renowned South African musician and actress Winnie Khumalo has tragically passed away at the age of 51. The talented star succumbed to a brief illness on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at her home, leaving fans and the entertainment industry in mourning.
Daughter Informs Close Friends
Media personality Sabelo “Ntombeningi” Sithole was among the first to receive the devastating news from Khumalo’s daughter, Rethabile Khumalo. “Rethabile called me, and I could tell something was wrong from her tone. She asked me to rush to Winnie’s house, but by the time I got there, it was too late. I am heartbroken and have lost a dear friend,” Sithole said.
Health Challenges
Khumalo had faced several health issues over the years. In late 2024, she was hospitalized briefly due to breathing difficulties, later diagnosed as asthma, a condition she was unaware of until then. Reflecting on her diagnosis, Khumalo said, “I was confused because I’ve never heard of anyone being diagnosed with asthma at my age. But the doctors assured me it was in the early stages.”
Her battle with diabetes and other health challenges, including a back operation in 2017 that left her wheelchair-bound for weeks, showcased her resilience. Despite these struggles, Khumalo remained positive, expressing her desire to see her grandchildren grow up.
A Storied Career in Music and Acting
Born in Soweto, Khumalo’s career began as a teenager when she was discovered by the legendary Brenda Fassie. At just 15, she released her first album, Hey Laitie, Tshina Tshina, followed by Dlamini. She later ventured into gospel music, producing the album Izono Zami.
Khumalo was well-known as a backing vocalist for Fassie and collaborated with several iconic South African artists, including Brothers of Peace, Bongo Maffin, and DJ Cleo. Her 2008 comeback album I Just Wanna Live My Life, produced by Kalawa Jazzmee Records, was a major success, earning nominations at the Channel O Music Awards and the South African Music Awards.
In addition to her musical achievements, Khumalo appeared in television series such as Muvhango and Mponeng, as well as the stage play The Journey.
Legacy Continued by Her Daughter
Winnie Khumalo’s daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, followed in her mother’s footsteps, pursuing a successful career in music. Despite initial setbacks on SA Idols, Rethabile established herself in the industry and overcame a significant health scare in 2024 after an alleged poisoning incident.
Winnie Khumalo’s influence and contributions to South African music and culture have left an indelible mark. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
