Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal – 15 December 2024 – A tragic incident in KwaZulu-Natal has left the country in shock after a man allegedly killed his girlfriend, shared a video discussing the incident, and was later found dead near the scene.

Incident Overview

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that officers responded to reports of a murder in the Malangeni area near Umzinto. The body of a 25-year-old woman was discovered on a gravel road with multiple injuries, and a broken knife was located nearby.

Reports indicate the suspect, identified as Sibusiso Lawrence, allegedly picked up the victim from her home. A domestic dispute is believed to have escalated, resulting in the fatal incident.

Video and Social Media Posts

Shortly after the incident, disturbing content surfaced online, including a video where the suspect discussed his actions. Authorities and advocacy groups have urged the public not to share or engage with such content, emphasizing that doing so causes additional harm to the victim's loved ones and the broader community.

Discovery of Suspect’s Body

Following the crime, police launched a manhunt for Lawrence. His body was later discovered hanging from a tree in a suspected suicide, a short distance from the location where the woman’s body was found.

Colonel Netshiunda stated:

“A man who was linked to the murder of a woman was found deceased on Wednesday morning during the police investigation. An inquest docket has been opened alongside the murder case.”

Outcry Over Gender-Based Violence

The incident has reignited concerns about gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa, particularly as it occurred shortly after the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children campaign. Advocacy groups have called for urgent systemic interventions and reminded the public to treat such matters with sensitivity and care.

Women’s advocacy group Women For Change condemned the sharing of distressing content related to the incident, stating:

“Sharing graphic content online does not help the victim or their loved ones. It further perpetuates trauma and disrespects the dignity of those affected. Let us focus on addressing gender-based violence constructively and responsibly.”

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. This case highlights the critical need for greater action and community awareness to combat gender-based violence.
