Accident Claims Life of IsiXhosa Exam Marker

A female IsiXhosa National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam marker tragically passed away following an accident at the Alberton Marking Centre on Tuesday, 3 December 2024.

According to reports, the marker allegedly tripped and hit her head against a pole while leaving the center on Tuesday evening. She was rushed to the hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries later that night.

MEC Matome Chiloane conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late marker:

"Her commitment to the education sector was invaluable, and her untimely passing is a profound loss to all of us."

To support those affected by the incident, the Gauteng Education Department's Psycho-Social Support Unit has been dispatched to provide emotional assistance to colleagues and others at the Alberton Marking Centre.

Acting Principal of Northview High Shot on School Premises

In a separate incident on the same day, the Acting Principal of Northview High School was shot six times while on the school premises.

The principal, who was attending to work-related duties at the time of the attack, is currently in intensive care at a hospital. Authorities have confirmed the incident and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

MEC Chiloane expressed shock and called for swift action:

"We strongly condemn this heinous act of violence against a dedicated educator. No one should feel unsafe in our schools, which are meant to be places of learning and growth."

Call for Safety and Justice

The Gauteng Department of Education has assured the public that both incidents are under investigation. Police are working to establish the cause of the shooting and provide answers to ensure justice for the victims.

As investigations continue, the department urges the public to respect the privacy of the families affected by these tragedies while allowing authorities to conclude their work.
