The Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Local Municipality, Alderman Thanduxolo David Khalipa, has been found guilty by the Odendaalsrus Magistrates’ Court on charges of assault and crimen injuria.

Khalipa faced three charges stemming from an altercation during a community meeting, which included one count of assault and two counts of crimen injuria. The charges were filed after an incident in which the mayor reportedly attacked and insulted his driver and protector.

The confrontation unfolded when tensions escalated during the meeting as community members became unruly. The mayor’s security team attempted to escort him out of the venue, but Khalipa allegedly responded with physical violence toward his protectors and made derogatory remarks.

The assaulted protectors subsequently filed a case against Khalipa, resulting in legal proceedings that concluded with the court finding him guilty.

Sentencing of the ‘Assailant’ Executive Mayor

Following his conviction, Alderman Thanduxolo Khalipa was sentenced by the Odendaalsrus Magistrates’ Court on the following charges:

  1. Assault Common – A fine of R5,000 or three months’ imprisonment.
  2. Crimen Injuria (First Count) – A fine of R1,000 or one month’s imprisonment.
  3. Crimen Injuria (Second Count) – A fine of R1,000 or one month’s imprisonment.

Additionally, the court declared Khalipa unfit to possess a firearm under Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

The sentencing stems from the incident during the community meeting, where Khalipa’s actions shocked many and drew widespread condemnation. The court’s decision to hold him accountable underscores the importance of upholding justice, even for those in positions of power.

This case highlights the need for public officials to lead by example, especially in times of tension and unrest. Khalipa's actions, now firmly condemned by the court, serve as a stark reminder of the responsibilities entrusted to those in leadership.
