The City of Johannesburg has issued a warning to residents about a surge in scams targeting homeowners. These fraudulent activities involve individuals posing as City officials and threatening to disconnect electricity or water services unless cash or e-wallet payments are made.
City Officials Will Never Request Cash Payments
Kgamanyane Maphologela, Director of Customer Communications for the City’s Group Finance Department, stressed that the City of Johannesburg and its service entities, including Johannesburg Water and City Power, will never request cash or e-wallet payments.
“We warn residents that the City or any of its service entities will never at any time ask for cash payments when they visit your property. The City has well-established payment options which residents should always use,” said Maphologela.
Secure Payment Methods for Municipal Accounts
Residents are encouraged to use safer payment methods like Easy Pay or make payments at outlets such as Pick n Pay and Shoprite Checkers. These secure options allow timely payment of municipal accounts without the risk of falling prey to fraudsters.
“Paying your municipal account timeously means you can enjoy the holiday season without the worry of outstanding debt,” Maphologela added.
Reporting Fraudulent Activities
The City urges residents to report suspicious activities to the Anti-Fraud Hotline at 0800 002 587 or via email at Whistle@joburg.org.za. For any queries related to municipal accounts, residents can contact Joburg Connect at 0860 562 874 or visit a Customer Service Centre.
Stay vigilant and only use authorized payment channels to ensure your safety during the festive season.
