Bank Employees Among Five Arrested for Ivory Park Mall Robbery

Tembisa, South Africa – Two female bank employees, both 36 years old, are among five suspects arrested in connection with a daring bank robbery that occurred at Ivory Park Mall on Wednesday, 27 November 2024. The robbery reportedly netted over three million rands.

The suspects, including two men aged 26 and 33, are set to appear before the Tembisa Magistrate's Court on Monday, 2 December 2024.

Collusion and Swift Action by Authorities

Preliminary investigations revealed that the bank employees allegedly colluded with the suspects to orchestrate the heist. Following the robbery, a task force was formed, comprising Gauteng police detectives, the Hawks' Serious Organized Crime Unit, police crime intelligence, Gauteng Highway Patrol, and bank investigators.

Within 48 hours, investigators identified potential suspects and tracked down getaway vehicles, leading to a series of swift arrests:

  • Rosslyn, Tshwane: The first suspect was arrested on Friday, 29 November 2024.
  • Ga-Rankuwa: The alleged kingpin of the operation was apprehended the same day. He was reportedly in possession of bank envelopes containing clients' bank cards stolen during the robbery, as well as a VW Golf that had been hijacked in Pretoria North.
  • At Work and Midrand: On Saturday, 30 November 2024, the first bank employee was arrested while still on duty, with the second employee apprehended later that day in Midrand.

Ongoing Investigation

The suspects face multiple charges, including business robbery, possession of hijacked vehicles, and possession of stolen property. Authorities have confirmed that efforts to track down additional suspects are underway.

Court Appearance

The five suspects will formally face charges on Monday, 2 December 2024, at the Tembisa Magistrate's Court.
