The Upington District Court has denied bail to Constable Luthando Meintjies (27), a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS), who is facing multiple serious charges, including three counts of rape, three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), and one count of kidnapping.
The charges stem from an incident that allegedly occurred on 15 November 2024. According to reports, Constable Meintjies arrived at his residence late at night with the 23-year-old complainant, allegedly after consuming alcohol.
It is alleged that during the night, the accused demanded that the complainant call her mother to ask for money to buy more alcohol. When the complainant could not secure the funds, Meintjies allegedly began assaulting her and proceeded to rape her multiple times throughout the night.
The complainant reportedly attempted to escape and sought refuge in the bathroom; however, the accused allegedly broke down the door to gain access. Amid the ordeal, she managed to send text messages to her uncle, pleading for help. The uncle responded by arriving at the accused's residence with the police, which led to Meintjies’ arrest.
The officer has since been charged with rape, assault GBH, and kidnapping.
The case has been remanded to 27 January 2025 for further investigation.
