Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Leads Operation Shanela for a Safer Festive Season
In an effort to ensure safer streets during the festive season, the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, spearheaded Operation Shanela earlier today at a multidisciplinary roadblock along Houghton Drive in Johannesburg.
The operation, which forms part of the #SaferFestiveSeason campaign, saw law enforcement officers from multiple agencies collaborating to search vehicles for contraband, drugs, and firearms. This proactive policing strategy aims to curb crime and maintain safety in the Johannesburg district.
Strengthening Police Presence
The operation was further bolstered by the deployment of newly trained constables who recently joined the SAPS ranks after successfully completing their training at various SAPS academies. Their presence reflects the SAPS’s ongoing commitment to strengthening law enforcement capabilities across the country.
Notable Achievements
Today’s roadblock yielded significant results:
- A minibus with a tampered engine was impounded.
- A total of 123 illegal immigrants were arrested.
These outcomes underscore the determination of law enforcement agencies to address crime and ensure the safety of communities during this festive period.
A Message of Commitment
Lieutenant General Mthombeni emphasized that Operation Shanela is part of ongoing efforts to build safer communities through proactive and collaborative policing. “We are committed to protecting our citizens and preventing crime through visible and decisive action,” he said.
The SAPS encourages citizens to remain vigilant during the festive season and to report any suspicious activities to local authorities.
