Hammanskraal, Gauteng – A 59-year-old licensing examiner from the Temba Driving Licence Testing Centre was arrested on charges of bribery following an investigation by the Road Traffic Management Corporation's (RTMC) Anti-Corruption Unit and the Hawks.
The examiner, who was under scrutiny for suspected irregularities at the testing centre, allegedly attempted to bribe investigators to halt the probe.
R50,000 Bribe Attempt
Authorities allege that the suspect offered R50,000 to anti-corruption officials, requesting that they discontinue the investigation. Acting under an approved entrapment order, investigators arranged to meet the suspect at a shopping mall in the vicinity.
During the encounter, the examiner reportedly handed over a white bag containing cash, which he claimed was R50,000, divided into two bundles.
Arrest and Court Appearance
The suspect was arrested on the spot and taken into custody. He is expected to appear in court on Monday, December 2, 2024, to face charges related to bribery and corruption.
Zero Tolerance for Corruption
The RTMC emphasized its commitment to rooting out corruption within the traffic sector, stating, "This arrest sends a strong message that corruption will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such acts will face the full force of the law."
Authorities have urged members of the public to report any suspicions of wrongdoing to ensure accountability in the traffic licensing system.
