Police Seek Suspect in Fatal Attack on Twin Brothers

Durban, 11 November 2024 – The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Taxi Violence Unit is requesting public assistance in locating 25-year-old Mpiyakhe Thobani Mbatha, who is wanted in connection with the murder of Mphilisi Ngubane, former chairperson of the Fredville Taxi Association, and the attempted murder of his twin brother.

According to reports, on 13 September 2024, the Ngubane twins were driving on Shezi Main Road in Mpumalanga township when they were ambushed by three men in a brown VW Polo. The assailants opened fire, tragically killing Mphilisi Ngubane, aged 35. His twin brother was able to escape the assault.

Police at the Mpumalanga station registered cases of murder and attempted murder, which were subsequently transferred to the Provincial Taxi Violence Unit for further investigation. Through intensive investigative efforts, authorities have identified Mbatha as a suspect. Originally from Greytown, Mbatha is also believed to reside in Inchanga, although his exact whereabouts are currently unknown.

A warrant for Mbatha's arrest has been issued by the Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court. Police are appealing to anyone with information on his location to contact Sergeant Khuyana at 079 490 8250 / 031 325 6393 or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111. The public can also provide anonymous tips via the MySAPS app.
