Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal – Senior officials of the Nongoma Local Municipality, including Mayor Clifford Mshangane Ndabandaba, Deputy Mayor Sabelo Goodman Nkosi, and Speaker Babongile Sithole, appeared in the Nongoma Magistrates’ Court on corruption charges linked to an alleged fraudulent tender.
The officials, along with Chief Financial Officer Njabulo Dludla, Supply Chain Manager Khulekani Manqele, and businessman Vukani Gumede, face 57 counts of corruption. The charges reportedly involve fraudulent activities amounting to R800,000.
The Allegations
The case centers on a municipal tender that investigators claim was fraudulently awarded for services within the municipality. The tender process allegedly violated procurement protocols and involved kickbacks, implicating both municipal officials and private entities.
Court Proceedings
All six accused appeared in court for the first time on the charges and have been remanded in custody. Their formal bail application is scheduled for November 29, 2024.
The charges highlight ongoing concerns over corruption within local government structures, with authorities emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in public procurement processes.
Community Reaction
Residents of Nongoma expressed outrage over the allegations, calling for swift justice and accountability. “This is a betrayal of trust. Public funds must be used to improve our community, not line the pockets of individuals,” said a local activist.
The Hawks and other law enforcement agencies have vowed to continue rooting out corruption in municipal governments, urging citizens to report suspicious activities.
