Johannesburg, South Africa – November 15, 2024

Mia le Roux, who made history as the first deaf woman crowned Miss South Africa, has withdrawn from the Miss Universe competition in Mexico due to health concerns, according to an announcement from the Miss South Africa organization. Le Roux, 28, was set to represent South Africa this weekend at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant but will not be able to participate.

The Miss South Africa organization emphasized that Le Roux’s health and well-being are their "utmost priority" and assured her of continued support as she focuses on her recovery. In a statement, Le Roux shared her emotions about the difficult decision, acknowledging the weight of the dreams and hopes placed upon her. "Making this decision has been incredibly challenging," she said, "but I am grateful for the opportunity to prioritize my health so that I can continue serving my country with full strength."

Le Roux has not disclosed the details of her health issue, but the organization praised her courage and resilience during this challenging period, stating, "Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery."

Le Roux, who was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at just one year old, has been an inspiration to many. With the aid of a cochlear implant, she has overcome numerous challenges, including two years of intensive speech therapy before she was able to say her first words. She has been vocal about her journey, expressing pride in her achievements and her desire to use her platform to represent South Africa's "beautiful diversity."

Despite the setback, Le Roux remains focused on her health and future advocacy. Her withdrawal from the Miss Universe pageant means South Africa will not have a representative at this year's competition, where 120 international contestants are vying for the prestigious title.
