Katlehong, Gauteng – 6 November 2024
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Mr. Matome Chiloane, expressed serious concern today over a suspected foodborne illness that affected 110 learners at Tamaho Primary School in Katlehong. This incident, reported on Wednesday, 6 November 2024, led to a large number of learners experiencing symptoms of stomach cramps and vomiting.
The illness appeared after the learners consumed samp during their school break. Emergency services promptly responded, ensuring that all affected learners were transported to various healthcare facilities for immediate attention. Of the 110 learners who required hospital treatment, 98 have since been discharged after receiving medical care, while 12 remain hospitalized for further observation.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), working closely with the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH), is closely monitoring the situation. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the illness, and the departments have pledged to keep the public updated as more information becomes available. The GDE has also committed to providing psychological and social support to the affected learners, their families, and the school community.
MEC Chiloane voiced his deep concern about the frequency of such incidents within Gauteng schools. “It is distressing to see incidents like this impacting our learners,” he stated. “Our priority is the health and safety of our students, and we are committed to identifying the root cause of this outbreak to prevent similar occurrences in the future.”
As investigations proceed, the GDE remains dedicated to ensuring that all schools provide a safe and healthy learning environment for every student.
