Kwa-Mhlanga, Mpumalanga – Violet Veleleni Mabena (57), an employee at the Department of Home Affairs, has been charged with corruption following her arrest by the Hawks' Serious Corruption Investigation Unit in Nelspruit. Mabena stands accused of violating the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (PRECCA), Act 12 of 2004, Section 4.
The case dates back to October 2021, when the complainant allegedly learned of an official who could assist in obtaining an identity document through unlawful means. After contacting the official, Mabena reportedly agreed to provide assistance for a payment of R20,000, which was allegedly made in full.
It is further alleged that Mabena sought help from a woman she had previously assisted in securing a birth certificate for a stepson. This individual was reportedly coerced into signing forms using the stepson’s fingerprint, facilitating the fraudulent acquisition of the identity document.
Following a tip-off from a whistle-blower, the Hawks launched an investigation and obtained a J50 warrant. Mabena was arrested at her workplace in front of her manager and colleagues.
During her court appearance, Mabena was granted bail of R3,000. The case has been postponed to 6 December 2024 at the Regional Court to allow for further investigation.
Authorities have urged the public to report instances of corruption to help root out such practices within government institutions.
