In a significant development in the fight against illegal mining, the Free State-based "Operation Vala uMgodi" has taken further strides in tackling the criminal elements fueling illicit mining activities across the region. The operation, focusing on both the causes and enablers of illegal mining, recently targeted cross-border crime networks in the Ficksburg area.
During an intelligence-led operation, a residence in De Villiers Street, Ficksburg, was identified as a suspected base for foreign nationals linked to illegal mining operations. Information pointed to the presence of firearms and a network of individuals traveling to engage in illegal activities in other areas.
Upon a tactical entry, authorities apprehended seven foreign nationals, aged between 30 and 48, who were staying at the premises. A thorough search revealed a 9mm black pistol with its serial number removed, loaded with seven rounds of ammunition, found in the sleeping area. Additionally, another loaded 9mm pistol, hidden in a toilet cistern, was recovered. Both firearms were unlicensed.
Police also confiscated 15 mobile phones containing incriminating messages and photographs, believed to be linked to the illegal mining activities. The suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, along with additional charges for violating immigration laws. They are expected to appear in court soon.
The success of this operation reflects the commitment of Free State law enforcement agencies to curtail illegal mining activities and address the underlying issues driving these crimes across the province.
