POTCHEFSTROOM - Authorities Urge Illegal Miners to Resurface Amid Ongoing Safety Efforts in Stilfontein
The Operation Vala Umgodi task team in the North West province has renewed its call for illegal miners still underground in the Stilfontein area to return to the surface. To ensure their safety, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have permitted the delivery of essential supplies, including water and food, to encourage a safe return. Law enforcement and safety officials will maintain a strong presence in the area until all remaining miners have resurfaced and face the appropriate legal processes.

The SAPS emphasized the importance of safeguarding lives, urging the illegal miners to come forward for assistance, including medical attention if needed. The community is also requested to cooperate by allowing police officials the necessary space to carry out their duties, as authorities remain committed to curbing illegal activities and protecting public safety.

As of today, over 1,000 illegal miners have emerged from underground operations, with only three more resurfacing recently. SAPS officials continue their efforts to uphold the rule of law, stressing that criminality will not be tolerated.
