Police operations in the Western Cape have led to the arrests of four suspects in separate incidents, following discoveries of illegal firearms, ammunition, suspected stolen goods, and an imitation firearm.

The first arrest occurred on Monday, October 28, 2024, when police conducted a stop-and-search operation in the Barcelona informal settlement. Following a lead, officers entered a residence within the settlement, where they detained a 31-year-old man after discovering a 9mm pistol and ammunition in his possession. The suspect now faces charges related to the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, Nyanga police responded to an e-hailing driver’s request for location sharing as a precautionary measure. Police, aware of the potential risks, accompanied the driver into the area. Upon arrival, officers observed three men acting suspiciously and communicating with others nearby, appearing to plan an assault on the approaching driver. Acting swiftly, police apprehended the men, who were subsequently detained on charges of attempted robbery, possession of presumed stolen property, and possession of an imitation firearm.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court to face the related charges.
