The Tshwane Metro Police Department’s (TMPD) Task Team in Mabopane is intensifying efforts to tackle suspected stolen vehicle incidents in Tshwane. On Friday, 18 October 2024, TMPD officers acted on a community tip-off about a suspicious situation in Winterveld, which was revealed to be the hijacking and kidnapping of two men from Midrand.

The victims had responded to a Facebook ad for an Audi A4 and were ambushed at gunpoint upon meeting the sellers. The suspects forced them to transfer R77,000 to an unknown account before the TMPD Task Team swiftly intervened, rescuing the victims unharmed and arresting three suspects.

In a separate incident that same day, TMPD officers and a tracking company recovered a vehicle in Ga-Rankuwa after three suspects hijacked a woman, forcing her to transfer money before abandoning her. These cases underline the TMPD’s ongoing efforts to curb vehicle theft and protect the community, urging caution when responding to social media ads.
