Thulani Mabaso (30) has been handed a life sentence by the High Court of South Africa in Johannesburg for his role in a series of violent crimes in Kagiso, including the murder of Kabelo Sebolai (33) on 7 February 2022. In addition to the life sentence, Mabaso was sentenced to 35 more years for charges such as attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and malicious property damage.

The court heard that Mabaso, while out on bail for a separate murder charge, entered a tavern on 7 February 2022. He retrieved a firearm from his car and opened fire indiscriminately into the crowd. One of the bullets fatally struck Sebolai, while others caused damage to a nearby vehicle. Despite efforts to assist Sebolai, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Mabaso later surrendered to authorities on 27 February 2022.

Senior State Advocate Nkosinathi Zuma denounced Mabaso's actions as heartless during closing arguments. Zuma also referenced a tragic event in Lusikisiki, where innocent lives were similarly lost, stressing the gravity of Mabaso's reckless crimes. Judge Mohamed Ismail, noting Mabaso's complete lack of remorse, imposed the maximum sentence, condemning his careless and violent actions. This case highlights the critical need for stronger measures to tackle gun violence and deliver justice for the victims.
