Siphosoxolo Myekethe, 45, who faces charges related to the mass killing of 18 people in Lusikisiki, has abandoned his bail application in the Lusikisiki Magistrates’ Court. Myekethe was on parole for a prior murder conviction when he was arrested following the tragic shooting that occurred on 28 September 2024 at two neighboring homes in Ngobozana Village, Lusikisiki. In addition to the 18 people killed, five others were injured during the attack.
Myekethe, who was apprehended at his residence in Mthimde Location, Mamfengwini Area, is charged with 18 counts of murder and one count of possession of an unlicensed firearm, specifically an AK-47 assault rifle. His initial court appearance took place a week ago, and during his latest appearance, he informed the court that he would not pursue bail, a move the prosecution had already prepared to oppose.
The case has been postponed to 26 November 2024 to allow further investigation, as additional suspects involved in the massacre remain at large. Myekethe has a criminal record that includes previous convictions for murder and escaping from lawful custody.
This case has drawn attention to concerns over parole policies and the risks posed by individuals with serious criminal histories returning to society.
