This is a major development in the Highflats massacre case. The death of the two main suspects, including the alleged mastermind, Khambule, in a shootout with KZN police in Umlazi, marks a significant step in the investigation. The suspects were reportedly found through an intelligence-driven operation involving various elite units like the DPCI Provincial Tracking Team, Anti-Gang Unit, and Provincial Organised Crime Unit. When police attempted to arrest them, the suspects allegedly opened fire, leading to their deaths. Fortunately, no officers were injured, though a police van was hit.

Police discovered two guns on the suspects, which have been positively linked to the massacre. It was previously speculated that a family connection was involved, with Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi confirming that this lead was being investigated. The suspects had come to Umlazi for a cleansing ritual, which is when the police intercepted them.
