In a series of targeted operations across the Western Cape on Tuesday, 29 October 2024, police made significant strides in their efforts to curb the presence of unlicensed and prohibited firearms. The operations led to the arrest of eight suspects in separate incidents.
In Lansdowne, an integrated police operation conducted a search at a residence, where officers found two rifles, a pistol with no serial number, various types of ammunition, and cash. The occupants, who were unable to produce licenses for the firearms, were detained. Five men, aged between 48 and 68, were arrested on charges related to the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
In a separate operation, Public Order Police were conducting intelligence-driven patrols in Mandela Park. While en route, officers spotted three men acting suspiciously at an intersection. Upon seeing the police vehicle, the men fled, prompting officers to pursue them on foot. One of the suspects, a 37-year-old man, was apprehended and found to be in possession of a pistol and ammunition. He was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Gang Unit responded to reports of a residence in Tafelsig being used as a storage site for dagga. During a search of the premises, police recovered a Smith and Wesson revolver with ammunition and three large bags of dagga. A 39-year-old Tanzanian national was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and dagga.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone and Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Courts. Police have reaffirmed their commitment to removing illegal firearms from the streets and ensuring public safety.
