44-Year-Old Suspect to Appear in Mahwelereng Court for Bail Application in Murder and Attempted Murder Case
POLOKWANE: The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has confirmed that a 44-year-old male suspect is scheduled for a bail hearing on Friday, 25 October 2024, in the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court. The suspect faces charges of murder and attempted murder following a fatal shooting at a community gathering earlier this year.
The incident occurred on 24 April 2024 in Mahwelereng, Home 2000, during a community meeting where tensions escalated around local municipal project issues. According to police reports, the suspect left the gathering after an argument, returned armed with a firearm, and opened fire on a group of attendees. Tragically, the shooting resulted in the death of a 37-year-old man and left another individual with severe injuries.
The suspect surrendered himself to authorities in September 2024, prompting a thorough investigation by SAPS. Emergency Medical Services responded promptly to the scene, but despite their efforts, the 37-year-old victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed a commitment to ensuring justice in this matter:
“We are encouraged that the suspect will finally appear in court to account for his actions. This case will be monitored closely to ensure justice prevails.”
The police investigation remains active as authorities work to bring clarity and closure to the community.
