DURBAN: 13 September 2024 – Police in Richards Bay have apprehended a 19-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Khanya Mthembu, who was fatally stabbed in the Mzingazi area on 8 September 2024.
On the night of 11 September 2024, police officers from Richards Bay Crime Prevention acted on intelligence regarding the suspect, who was reportedly hitchhiking in the Madlankala area of Esikhaleni, attempting to flee to his hideout in Nongoma. An undercover operation was swiftly organized, and the suspect was offered a ride by a police officer driving an unmarked vehicle. At a nearby petrol station, the officer called for backup, resulting in the successful arrest of the suspect.
According to the investigation, the suspect and the victim had an argument at a tavern. After the victim left the establishment, the suspect allegedly followed him and fatally stabbed him near a sports field. The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate's Court on Friday, 13 September 2024.
